Three organ transplants per day in Belgium, say health groups

Around three organ transplants are performed daily in Belgium, according to Transplantoux, the Belgian Transplantation Society, and pharmaceutical company Takeda. Marking World Transplant Day, the organisations are calling for improved post-transplant care.

Figures from Eurotransplant show that 1,082 transplants were carried out in Belgium in 2024, involving organs such as kidneys, livers, and lungs from deceased donors.

While survival rates continue to improve, many patients face a long recovery. The organisations stress the need for integrated, multidisciplinary care involving doctors, nurses, psychologists, dietitians, and other specialists to support patients and families throughout the recovery process.

Earlier this year, Belgium’s Federal Public Health Service reported an 8.5 per cent rise in transplant procedures compared to 2023.
