Build a Rocket Boy Confirms Layoffs Following Disastrous Launch of MindsEye
Build a Rocket Boy has confirmed that it is undergoing layoffs less than a month after the troubled release of its first game, MindsEye. The studio faced significant criticism due to major performance issues and poor reviews, which have led to internal restructuring, reports 24brussels.
The developer’s statement acknowledged the difficult decision to inform employees about the internal changes. “We can confirm that we have had to make the painful decision to notify our hardworking team of some internal changes at Build A Rocket Boy,” the company stated. It is currently working to reassign roles for those affected while initiating a formal consultation process that may result in redundancies. The studio expressed a commitment to handle this process with transparency and respect for its employees.
MindsEye, the narrative action game, was designed as the starting point for an expansive universe by former Rockstar Games producer Leslie Benzies. Despite its ambitious vision, the game’s launch was marred by reports of serious glitches and user dissatisfaction. Players have reported issues such as freezing and crashes, leading to widespread disappointment.
The release of MindsEye also saw several planned promotional events, including sponsored game streams, getting canceled at the last minute, further reflecting the game’s troubled reception. This follows a series of negative reviews, which impacted player confidence and overall interest in the title.
The company had previously issued a content roadmap promising extensive updates and community involvement, including the possibility of multiplayer features. However, the current climate, where games like Fortnite and Roblox dominate, presents significant challenges for new entrants like MindsEye.
While the total number of affected employees has not been disclosed, reports suggest that approximately 100 of the studio’s 500 employees may be impacted. Build a Rocket Boy remains committed to fulfilling its promises regarding MindsEye, although the path forward appears increasingly difficult given the current gaming landscape.
