U.S. Halts Certain Arms Supplies to Ukraine Amid Concerns Over Ammunition Stockpiles

On July 1, 2025, the Pentagon announced a temporary halt to the supply of some surface-to-air missiles and precision munitions for Ukraine, citing fears of dangerously low U.S. arms stockpiles, reports 24brussels.

According to three informed sources, the decision was made by Elbridge Colby, the chief defense policy advisor, following an assessment of the Pentagon’s ammunition supplies, which raised alarms over a critical reduction in artillery shells, surface-to-air missiles, and precision-guided munitions.

The suspension of a portion of the promised assistance, which was committed during Joe Biden’s administration, was reportedly decided in early June but is only now being implemented, coinciding with Ukraine facing intensified attacks from Russia involving missiles and drones targeting civilian infrastructure in Kyiv and other cities.

The sources provided this information on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of ongoing military operations. As of publication, the Pentagon and the White House had not issued an official comment on the matter.

Meanwhile, the European Union has secured commitments to deliver 80% of the two million artillery rounds planned for transfer to Ukraine throughout 2025.
