Belgian Basketball Player Julie Vanloo Signs with Los Angeles Sparks

Belgian basketball player Julie Vanloo has joined the Los Angeles Sparks in the WNBA after being released by the Golden State Valkyries earlier this week. The controversial circumstances surrounding her departure from the Valkyries have drawn significant attention in Belgium, particularly as she missed the Belgian Cats’ European Championship celebrations to return to her club.

On the previous Sunday, the Belgian Cats successfully defended their European title in a tense final against Spain in Greece. Following their victory, they received a warm welcome in Brussels, including a visit with King Philippe and a fan celebration at the Grand Place.

However, Vanloo faced criticism as she had to leave the celebration early to fly back to the United States for the Valkyries. Upon her return, she was informed that the team would no longer require her services. This decision was controversial given that Vanloo had previously left her club to represent Belgium in the European Championships, contrary to the team’s wishes.

The media’s response to her treatment was largely negative, leading to a wave of support from fans across Belgium. Vanloo expressed her disappointment at the situation.

“Two days ago, I became a European champion, and twenty-four hours later, I was pushed aside by the Valkyries,” she wrote on Instagram. “Due to the eighteen-hour journey back to the Bay, I missed the fan ceremony and the chance to share this special medal moment with my family and friends. To be honest, that hurt. I understand that it’s business, but nothing can prepare you for the loneliness you feel when you are pushed aside. It feels like the whole world suddenly falls on your shoulders.”

New Opportunities for Vanloo in Los Angeles

On Thursday evening, Vanloo received positive news when she was signed by the Los Angeles Sparks, where she will be teammates with fellow Belgian player Julie Allemand. Vanloo quickly transitioned into her new team, participating in the game against the defending champions, the New York Liberty, just hours after being signed. Coming off the bench, she played briefly in the match, which the Sparks lost 89-79.

This marks Vanloo’s second stint in the WNBA after making her debut last year with the Washington Mystics. Notably, her appearance for the Sparks was her 50th game in the league. In Europe, she has spent the last two seasons with Galatasaray.
