Germany’s Chancellor Affirms Ongoing Support for Ukraine Amidst Rising Tensions
On July 9, 2025, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz addressed parliamentary debates concerning the country’s new budget, reaffirming his commitment to support Ukraine despite challenges from leftist and pro-Russian factions within the Bundestag, reports 24brussels.
In his speech, Merz issued a stern warning to Russia, stating, “diplomatic means have been exhausted.” He emphasized that the “criminal regime” openly questions the right of another country to exist through military force and threatens to dismantle the political order of freedom across Europe.
The Chancellor asserted, “The federal government that I lead will do everything in its power to prevent this.” He further noted the necessity for the German Armed Forces, the Bundeswehr, to receive prompt support to ensure Germany’s defense.
Reports indicate that German legislators are requesting increased financial assistance for Ukraine. This demand was articulated in a letter from members of the Greens party to Merz. Additionally, Germany is exploring the possibility of supplying Ukraine with more Patriot missile systems, even though the current wait time for such deliveries is approximately four to five years. Analysts from Defense Express suggest that reallocating already contracted systems may be the most realistic approach for a swift transfer.
