Restoration of Ghent Altarpiece Delayed Until Spring 2027

The restoration of the Ghent Altarpiece by the Van Eyck brothers will now conclude in spring 2027, postponed from the previous announcement of 2026. This was disclosed during a press conference at the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent, where restoration efforts are currently underway. The Flemish government has allocated additional funding for this final phase of restoration. , reports 24brussels.

The first phase of restoring the Ghent Altarpiece, also known as The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, commenced in 2012. In May 2023, the project entered its final phase, which involves the repair of seven upper panels showcasing key figures such as Adam, the Godhead, John the Baptist, Mary, and angels.

Initially, the restoration team estimated completion within three years; however, the timeline has shifted due to unforeseen complications in the restoration process. Visitors to St Bavo’s Cathedral will now have to wait until spring 2027 to view the completed work.

A significant factor in the delay is the discovery of extensive overpainting during the restoration. “In the mid-16th century, the Ghent Altarpiece was extensively overpainted to cover up small damaged spots,” stated Hélène Dubois, head of the restoration team. “Carrying out additional research and removing the overpainting has naturally caused delays.”

During a visit to the restoration workshop on Thursday, Flemish Minister of Immovable Heritage Ben Weyts and Culture Minister Caroline Gennez announced an additional investment of 319,000 euros to finalize the restoration efforts. The total costs for the restoration have now reached 5 million euros.
