Belgium’s Foreign Minister Regrets US Withdrawal from Unesco

Belgium’s Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot expressed regret over the recent decision by President Donald Trump to withdraw the United States from Unesco, effective at the end of 2026. Reports indicate that Trump initiated a 90-day review of US Unesco membership in February, highlighting concerns over antisemitism and anti-Israel sentiment. The White House has criticized Unesco for supporting “woke, divisive cultural and social causes” that allegedly contradict the policies favored by American voters, according to a spokesperson.

The US had previously exited Unesco in 2017 during Trump’s first term, only to rejoin under President Joe Biden’s administration. The latest withdrawal announcement was anticipated, and Unesco has reportedly been preparing for this outcome, as articulated by its Director-General Audrey Azoulay.

“The decision of the United States to withdraw once again from Unesco is deeply regrettable,” Prévot stated, emphasizing the need for strong multilateral institutions in a world characterized by conflict, disinformation, and division. He affirmed Belgium’s commitment to Unesco and the belief that global challenges necessitate cooperative solutions.

“However regrettable, this announcement was expected, and Unesco has prepared for it.”

The US played a pivotal role in founding Unesco post-World War II to promote education, science, and culture. The organization’s funding structure has been evolving, with recent efforts to lessen dependence on American contributions, which currently account for approximately 8% of its total budget, amounting to $75 million annually.

Azoulay noted that this withdrawal would impact Unesco’s activities and may compel the organization to seek alternative funding sources. She reiterated her deep regret over the decision while acknowledging its anticipated nature.

As both the global community and Unesco brace for the implications of this decision, questions linger about the future of international cooperation in areas of education, science, and cultural preservation.

Strong multilateral institutions are essential to address the world’s complex challenges effectively, and the US withdrawal raises concerns about the collective capacity to confront these issues.

This development marks another chapter in the ongoing debate over America’s role in international organizations and the future of Unesco amidst changing political landscapes.
