The Engineer Behind the First USB-C iPhone Launches Phone Case to Convert Lightning Ports
Ken Pillonel, the engineer who gained recognition for creating the first USB-C iPhone, has unveiled a new phone case that allows older iPhones to switch from Lightning ports to USB-C. This initiative aims to combat planned obsolescence by reducing the need for users to replace their older devices, reports 24brussels.
Pillonel announced the project, highlighting that it transforms his previous DIY modification into a commercial product available for purchase. “This isn’t just a hack anymore; it’s the biggest project I’ve ever done,” he stated in his latest YouTube video.
The phone case is compatible with “most models” and can be purchased from obsoless.com, with prices ranging between $45 and $55. Key features include support for MagSafe charging, data transfers to computers, CarPlay, and fast charging at 9V. Unlike his original modification from 2021, where fast charging was conditional on cable orientation, the new design allows fast charging regardless of how the connector is inserted.
Pillonel guarantees several functionalities: “Fast charging, data transfers to computers, and CarPlay. Anything else is not officially supported and you’ll need to remove the case to use it, sadly,” he explained. The restrictions arise from Apple’s control over Lightning accessories, ensuring they profit from accessory sales.
In addition to the USB-C conversion, the case features a dedicated SIM card storage slot, convenient for travelers. It initially launches in dark gray, with additional colors expected by September.
Pillonel has also modified other Apple products to support USB-C, including AirPods. Similar to his previously released cases, this new offering aims to eliminate the need for users to carry extra cables or USB-C adapters with their devices.
Experts say this innovative product could change the landscape for smartphone accessories and challenge the electronics industry’s planned obsolescence practices, potentially influencing future product designs and consumer choices.
The introduction of this phone case reflects a growing momentum towards sustainability in technology, resonating with consumer demands for longevity and adaptability in their devices.
The launch has garnered attention from various media outlets and technology enthusiasts, further underscoring the need for alternatives to proprietary technology and the increasing consumer preference for compatibility and sustainability in their electronics.
