DAZN Resumes Negotiations for Belgian Football Broadcasting Rights

The streaming platform DAZN has resumed negotiations with telecom providers regarding the broadcasting rights for Belgian football, following a breakdown in discussions earlier this summer. The Jupiler Pro League matches faced removal from traditional television without a sublicensing agreement. Reports 24brussels.

In mid-July, DAZN announced it had ceased negotiations with major telecom operators Telenet and Proximus. The absence of a deal threatened the visibility of Belgian football on traditional channels.

Recently, the consumer organization Testaankoop expressed intentions to escalate the issue to the Belgian Competition Authority, citing potential negative impacts on consumers stemming from a lack of competition in the market.

On Monday, DAZN expressed its desire to reopen discussions with both Telenet and Proximus, although the timeline for these talks has not been clarified.

Concerns Over Pricing

In earlier negotiations, both telecom companies found DAZN’s pricing requirements excessive, especially as many customers shift away from traditional TV packages in favor of streaming options.

DAZN reported satisfaction with viewing figures from the first matchday but provided no specific data. In response, both Telenet and Proximus indicated they had noticed a decline in sports subscription numbers as anticipated.
