Rachida Dati Confirms Candidacy for Paris Constituency

Rachida Dati has confirmed her intention to run for election in her Paris constituency, declaring on X that she aims to represent “the region I have served for 15 years.” In a competitive political atmosphere, her announcement comes amid tensions with fellow party member Michel Barnier, who has also declared his candidacy for the same seat, reports 24brussels.

Dati, a prominent and outspoken figure in French politics, serves as the local mayor of the 7th arrondissement of Paris, which includes significant landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower. Her long-standing influence in the district faces a challenge from Barnier’s unexpected entry into the race, which has reportedly angered her.

In a recent interview, Dati asserted her resilience: “I’ve never been a bit player, or a pushover. I don’t give up and I’m not afraid.” This statement highlights her determination to maintain her political position amid mounting competition.

Political insiders have speculated that Dati may not have initially intended to participate in the upcoming by-election but is instead leveraging this conflict to strengthen her position ahead of the Paris mayoral elections next year. Her relationship with Les Républicains has been complex since she joined the centrist government of former Prime Minister Gabriel Attal in early 2024.

The emerging rivalry between Dati and Barnier adds to a history of internal disputes within Les Républicains, which have been prevalent since the party lost power in 2012. As France approaches the 2027 presidential election, party leadership is likely to be concerned about maintaining unity and avoiding further escalation of these conflicts.
