Record Drone Attacks by Russia in July 2025

In July 2025, Russia launched 6,297 kamikaze drones of the “Shahed” type and decoy targets, marking an unprecedented monthly record, reports 24brussels. This figure reflects a staggering 1,378% increase compared to July 2024, when 426 drones were recorded.

The total number of drones launched in July 2025 equals the aggregate of drones deployed over ten months in 2024, from January to October. The rise in drone attacks has been consistent, with June 2025 seeing the first instance of over 5,000 drones launched, followed by more than 6,000 in July, despite periods of relative calm attributed to unfavorable weather for launches.

Analyst Kyle Glen presents a monthly trend regarding the escalation of Russia’s drone capabilities:

  • Over 1,000 drones in September 2024;
  • Over 2,000 in November 2024;
  • Over 3,000 in February 2025;
  • Over 4,000 in March 2025;
  • Over 5,000 in June 2025;
  • Over 6,000 in July 2025.

According to Glen, this surge indicates a significant ramp-up in Russia’s drone production capabilities since the latter half of 2024 into early 2025. Ukrainian air defense forces are currently challenged by an unprecedented volume of attacks, which are being complicated by evolving enemy tactics.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported that Russian forces have deployed thermal cameras on some Shahed drones to enhance strike accuracy. Meanwhile, as Russia prepares for thousands of daily strikes, Ukraine continues to rely on assistance from its allies, raising questions about the promised “drone shield” — whether it is a reality or an expensive illusion.
