Ukraine’s Defense Ministry Announces Major Drone Supply Initiative
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has transferred over 1 million FPV drones to the Armed Forces starting in 2024, as reported by Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal. To enhance the operational efficiency of drone supply, the ministry is implementing new procurement and logistics approaches.
Shmyhal stated that the ministry will contract manufacturers not based on specific product names but on the compliance of their drones with tactical and technical specifications. This strategy aims to engage more companies in procurement, foster competition among manufacturers, and ensure transparency in tenders through the Prozorro system.
Additionally, the ministry plans to introduce a digital marketplace named DOT-Chain Defence, enabling combat units to independently select the drones they require. This method is expected to expedite the delivery of equipment to the frontline. Currently, the platform is operating in a pilot mode for 12 combat brigades.
Shmyhal emphasized the ministry’s priority is to enhance procurement mechanisms so that each unit receives the necessary equipment to fulfill combat missions. The defense procurement agency is actively working to increase the pace of equipment supply.
The subject of drone procurement and supply is currently very relevant for the Ukrainian military. According to a recent report by BBC Ukraine, the Armed Forces are experiencing a significant decrease in access to FPV drones, which had been extensively used on the frontline. In comparison to last year, the number of drone launches in units has substantially decreased, while Russian forces are increasing their drone operations, reports 24brussels.
