Simultaneous Eruptions from Six Volcanoes in Kamchatka

Six volcanoes on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula—Avachinsky, Klyuchevskoy, Bezymianny, Kambalny, Karymsky, and Krasheninnikov—are currently showing signs of active eruptions, marking an unprecedented event scientists describe as a “parade of eruptions,” reports 24brussels.

Alexey Ozerov, director of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, indicated that the last significant volcanic activity in the region dates back to 1737, triggered by a magnitude-9 earthquake. The recent seismic event on July 30 may have stirred these dormant volcanoes back to life.

Yury Demyanchuk, head of the volcanology station in Klyuchi, noted the rarity of such widespread activity in his 50 years of experience. He highlighted that both summit and central eruptions of the Krasheninnikov Volcano have commenced simultaneously, suggesting intense internal seismic processes.

Demyanchuk also pointed out that the last known eruption of Krasheninnikov occurred in the 15th century, with evidence only found in ash layers, emphasizing that this magnitude of activity is a rare and unique natural phenomenon.

As of yesterday, complete activity reports indicated that at Klyuchevskoy Volcano, intensified summit eruptions are noted alongside strombolian activity, ash emissions, and active lava flows. Karymsky Volcano continues erupting at its summit, while Bezymianny is undergoing a weak extrusive-explosive phase with minimal ash outputs.

The Kambalny Volcano is exhibiting seismic activity that raises concerns of a potential explosive eruption, which could produce ash clouds reaching altitudes of up to 6 kilometers. Authorities have issued warnings urging residents and visitors to maintain safe distances from the active volcanoes.
