French Officials Urge Action Against TikTok’s Compliance with Digital Services Act

French officials are demanding enforcement of the Digital Services Act (DSA) as it pertains to social media platforms, particularly TikTok. They have called upon Arcom, in collaboration with the European Commission, to ensure that these platforms fulfill their obligations to protect minors and mitigate systemic risks, reports 24brussels.

The call to action emphasizes the need for transparency regarding algorithm operations and suggests that Arcom compile a report for potential investigation by the European Commission. This initiative reflects ongoing concerns about the content moderation practices of major social media entities.

This request follows previous actions taken by the French government. In April, French official Chappaz highlighted TikTok’s troubling trend known as ‘SkinnyTok,’ which promotes unhealthy body images and eating behaviors through algorithmically-driven content.

As scrutiny of TikTok intensifies, the European Commission is currently investigating the platform for potential violations of the DSA. In response to regulatory pressure, TikTok has prohibited the usage of the SkinnyTok hashtag.

Both Arcom and TikTok have not issued statements regarding the latest developments in this matter.
