Limburg – Foster Care Limburg is urgently seeking new foster families, particularly for older children and teenagers. Jana Bens emphasizes that this demographic is frequently neglected. An informational event is scheduled for Monday at La Reine Sucrée.
According to VRT News, there are currently 124 children waiting for foster homes in Limburg, 29 of whom are over the age of 10. Foster Care Limburg highlights that many families prefer to foster younger children, which contributes to the gap.
The organization warns that older children often face disregard, despite needing care just as much as their younger counterparts. They are calling for families to offer these teenagers a chance at a brighter future.
“People think that older children often carry a lot of baggage, much bigger than younger ones,”
says Jana Bens from Foster Care Limburg.
“But that’s certainly not always the case. We always ensure a good match with the family and also support the family in providing the best possible care for the child.”
What can families do for Limburg’s 124 waiting children?
Bens adds that many children in need remain unregistered on the waiting list. For younger children, judges typically opt for foster care, placing them on the list immediately. However, this is less common for older children, resulting in many teens not receiving the necessary assistance.
She estimates that the actual number of children needing care exceeds 124, as many older children remain hidden from the system and consequently miss opportunities for safe environments. Foster Care Limburg urges families to step up, emphasizing that teenagers also deserve safety and the chance to thrive.
An informational evening will take place on August 11, 2025, to recruit potential foster families. Officials noted that while interest exists, many individuals lack clarity on what fostering entails, which deters them from applying. So far, only six families have registered. Foster Care Limburg believes that many families can provide a nurturing home for a child.
During the event, a foster parent will recount their experiences, offering insights into caring for a child. The gathering will be held at the cycling café La Reine Sucrée, located at Vijfeindestraat 102 in Houthalen-Helchteren. All those interested in learning more about fostering are welcome to attend, regardless of whether they are ready to commit. Further details and registration information are available on their website.
Foster Care Limburg operates within the official foster care framework in Flanders, established in the 1980s and formalized by a decree in 2001. This legislation introduced clear guidelines for foster families and the children under their care.
The organization collaborates with youth services and judges to find suitable homes for children. As the demand for foster families, especially for older children, has increased, Foster Care Limburg hosts events and provides support to encourage more families to engage.
