DJI introduces Romo, its first robot vacuum cleaner with drone technology

DJI Unveils New Romo Robot Vacuum Cleaner Amid Limited Availability

DJI has launched its first robot vacuum cleaner, the Romo, during a product reveal that emphasized advanced technology derived from its drones. Currently, the Romo is only set to debut in China, nudging aside expectations for a U.S. release. Starting prices are CNY 4,699 (~$654) for the Romo S and A models and CNY 6,799 (~$947) for the transparent Romo P, with a broader international release anticipated later this year, reports 24brussels.

The Romo features a “binocular fisheye vision sensor” and three wide-angle laser sensors, enhanced by a machine learning perception algorithm, to navigate and avoid common household obstacles. Its cleaning strategies adapt based on detected items, allowing it to clean closely around furniture but steer clear of socks or pet messes to prevent jams.

With suction power reaching up to 25,000Pa, the Romo is nearly twice as powerful as the recently announced Roomba Max 705. This model employs anti-tangle brushes, adaptable sweeping mechanisms, and mop pads that adjust based on the floor type. When encountering light debris, Romo can slow down to improve cleaning efficacy while ramping up suction.

Each Romo model comes with an advanced docking station responsible for emptying waste, cleaning the unit, refilling water, and charging in approximately two and a half hours. While the Romo S offers a sleek opaque design, the Romo A includes a transparent section, and the Romo P features a complete transparent casing, including the docking station — a design choice not typically seen in the marketplace.

In addition to standard vacuuming duties, the Romo P holds a separate compartment for specialized mopping solutions, allowing users to customize cleaning with antibacterial agents or degreasers based on specific areas within the home.

Leveraging DJI’s drone technology, Romo can autonomously create efficient cleaning routes, with the plans stored locally for privacy. Users can issue commands through voice control, also enabling the Romo to function as a remote security camera to supervise pets or visitors in real time.

With this innovative launch, DJI expands its footprint beyond aerial technology, positioning Romo as a notable entry in the competitive smart home sector, although its initial absence in U.S. markets raises questions about its broader accessibility.

This marks a significant development in household automation, reflecting DJI’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology into everyday products within the rapidly evolving smart home industry. As consumers await international availability, the performance and durability of these robots in domestic settings will be crucial for future consumer uptake.
