Severe Flooding Hits Mexico City Amid Intense Rainfall

Heavy downpours across Mexico City led to significant flooding on Sunday afternoon and evening, with the most severe impact felt in the northern, eastern, central, and western districts, including the International Airport. In response, the city government issued a “purple alert,” indicating the highest level of risk associated with storms, reports 24brussels.

The Secretariat of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC) confirmed that the Cuauhtémoc borough was placed under the highest alert, where rainfall measurements indicated up to 75.73 millimeters in the Historic Center area. The SGIRPC warned of anticipated rainfall amounts between 50 to 70 millimeters, alongside the potential for hail, occurring between 6:35 PM and 10:00 PM.

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) predicted intense rainfall, heavy localized showers, thunderstorms, and possible hail throughout all 16 boroughs of the capital, including Álvaro Obregón, Azcapotzalco, and Coyoacán, among others.

Operations at the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) were disrupted due to the adverse weather, resulting in a three-hour closure. An official announcement from AICM explained that, in light of low visibility and the need for operational safety, all landings and take-offs were suspended temporarily to facilitate drainage of floodwaters and restore airport functionality.

In addition to the airport, numerous streets in various districts were submerged, affecting transportation and access for residents. Local authorities are advising citizens to remain cautious and monitor updates as the weather conditions evolve.

The city is mobilizing emergency services to address the fallout from the flooding, with rescue operations expected to continue as efforts to restore normalcy proceed. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges that Mexico City faces regarding its infrastructure and preparedness for severe weather events in the context of climate change.
