Bornem – Starting today, Aug 11, 2025, Robert Verbelenstraat in Puurs will be closed for eight months as part of a significant upgrade to the sewer system and the addition of new cycle paths. The project, led by Alderman Anne De Ron, aims to enhance drainage and prevent flooding. Additionally, local DIY store Rosiers may face temporary closure due to the disruptions, reports 24brussels.

Why will the road between Puurs and Bornem be closed for 8 months?

Alderman Anne De Ron emphasized the importance of this closure to ensure timely completion of the project. Acknowledging potential initial inconveniences, she stated that the long-term benefits include safer and improved travel conditions. Drivers are advised to follow designated detours, with appropriate signs to guide them.

The utility Pidpa will be responsible for renovating the sewer system to effectively separate rainwater from wastewater, while the municipality concurrently renovates the road. A key component of the upgrades includes constructing elevated cycle paths, designed to protect cyclists, especially in areas with speed limits reaching 70 kilometers per hour.

Robert Verbelenstraat is expected to remain closed to vehicular traffic until the end of April 2026, necessitating the use of the adjacent N16 regional road as an alternative route. Rosiers has expressed concerns over a potential decline in customer traffic, with plans to operate only during certain hours or possibly close if business suffers severely. More details are available on the municipality’s website.

What were the results of the sewer and road upgrades in Bornem?

A similar upgrade was conducted in Bornem a few years ago, where the sewer system was modernized to efficiently separate rainwater and wastewater. This project also included the redesign of roadways to incorporate safer cycling paths and improved surface quality. While the previous project resulted in traffic disruption during construction, it ultimately led to a significant reduction in flooding and improved street safety, benefits evident to local residents following its completion.
