EU Faces Pressure Amid Global Conflicts

On Monday evening, EU foreign ministers convened for an emergency meeting focused primarily on Ukraine. The situation underscores the European Union’s struggle to establish itself as a credible global actor, as its support for Ukraine has been characterized by hesitation and delays. Meanwhile, its reactions are muted in Gaza and overshadowed by other powers in the South Caucasus, highlighting a significant challenge in its diplomatic efforts, reports 24brussels.

The EU has transitioned from a mere trading bloc, established post-World War II to foster peace through economic integration, to a political entity grappling with the complexities of modern international relations. Initially aimed at preventing conflict via economic cooperation, the EU now faces limitations on its peacekeeping rationale, unable to effectively counter hard power threats and risking its credibility on the global stage.

In Ukraine, the EU’s initial response was marked by reluctance following Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, leading to limited support for Ukraine as it faced aggression. Since the large-scale invasion began in 2022, military and financial assistance has been ramped up. However, significant gaps remain, including delayed arms deliveries and inconsistent sanctions that have not sufficiently hindered Russia’s military operations. Promised ammunition continues to be awaited by Ukraine.

Gaza Conflict

The EU’s response to the ongoing war in Gaza has also drawn criticism. Since October 2023, Israel’s military actions have resulted in tens of thousands of civilian casualties and widespread humanitarian crises, raising alarms about potential war crimes. Despite these developments, the EU has not suspended its partnership with Israel, which mandates human rights compliance, nor has it imposed sanctions, allowing trade and arms sales to proceed. This passivity has led EU officials to warn that such silence may implicate the bloc in the conflict.

Caucasus Dynamics

In the South Caucasus, the EU finds itself increasingly marginalized. Following Azerbaijan’s takeover of Nagorno-Karabakh in 2023, the EU’s mediation role has diminished significantly, with the United States now leading diplomatic efforts. Recent discussions involve a potential lease of the Zangezur corridor that would connect Azerbaijan to Nakhchivan via Armenian territory, a move that threatens Armenia’s sovereignty while enhancing U.S. influence in the region. This concept, previously proposed by the EU, illustrates a missed opportunity for the bloc as it fails to assert its role effectively.

Need for Decisive Action

Originally conceived to promote stability and avert conflict, the EU appears slow and overly cautious in addressing today’s geopolitical threats. As Russia continues its aggressive posture, humanitarian crises escalate in Gaza, and regional powers fill the diplomatic void in the Caucasus, the EU’s ability to leverage its economic power and legal authority remains hampered by a lack of political resolve. Without decisive action, the EU risks diminishing its relevance in global affairs.
