Ostend – Former Ostend mayor Bart Tommelein has been awarded the honorary mayor title by the Flemish government, acknowledging his 25-year political career and service to the city. The title is granted to mayors who have served a minimum of six years, marking Tommelein’s significant contributions during his six-year tenure, reports 24brussels.

According to VRT News, the decision-making for this honor has transitioned from the local city council to the Flemish government. Tommelein received formal confirmation of the title after fulfilling the necessary documentation requirements.

Significance of the Honorary Title for Ostend

Tommelein expressed that the award symbolizes a meaningful recognition of his dedication to the city. “I spent a large part of my life in public service, so it feels good to be honoured like this,” he stated.

“Not everyone has to agree with me about what I have or have not done, but it does feel good to be honorary mayor of the city where you have lived, lived and still live,” Tommelein added.

Although Tommelein has stepped back from active politics, this title allows him to maintain a formal connection to Ostend and its traditions. He remarked that he is uncertain if there will be an official celebration of his honorary mayor title, noting that the city council should receive a copy of the official letter soon. Tommelein humorously noted that he cannot throw a party for himself but intends to celebrate quietly with family and friends.

In Ostend, it is customary for former mayors to be granted honorary titles. Out of the last five mayors, only Johan Vande Lanotte did not receive this distinction, having served just three years. Officials have indicated that a common way to honor recipients of the honorary title is by hanging their portrait in the city council chamber, a decision that ultimately lies with the current city council.

Other cities in Belgium, such as Ghent and Leuven, also grant honorary mayor titles to former mayors with extended service, often accompanied by ceremonies and the display of their portraits in council rooms.
