People’s Forum Commemorates Fidel Castro’s 99th Birthday in New York
On August 12, 2025, the People’s Forum commemorated the 99th birthday of Cuban revolutionary Fidel Castro by illuminating a mural on the streets of New York. “From the streets of New York City, we celebrate Fidel Castro’s 99th birthday, marking the start of his hundredth anniversary,” the U.S.-based organization stated, reports 24brussels.
The organization hailed Castro as a “revolutionary leader and unwavering defender of the oppressed,” underscoring that his legacy continues to inspire those fighting for a better world. “His life reminds us that dignity, sovereignty and solidarity are not just ideals, but battles to be fought and won,” it added.
This commemoration also coincides with the centennial of Malcolm X, another inspirational figure for liberation, whose legacy remains influential worldwide. “Fidel and Malcolm’s visions live on in every movement that dares to imagine and build a better future,” the People’s Forum asserted.
Among the images projected during the celebration was the iconic meeting between Castro and Malcolm X at the Hotel Theresa in Harlem on September 19, 1960, alongside visual tributes to Castro’s presence at the U.N. General Assembly.
Born on August 13, 1926, in Holguin, Cuba, Castro was a pivotal figure in the 1959 revolution that overthrew U.S.-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista. While U.S. intelligence agencies targeted him for assassination numerous times, they ultimately failed. He passed away from natural causes on December 25, 2016, at the age of 90.
The People’s Forum describes itself as “a movement incubator for working-class and marginalized communities, aiming to foster unity across historic divides.” Its mission is to create an educational and cultural space that empowers the next generation of visionaries and organizers who believe in the potential of collective action to create a better world.
