Lier market distributes 2,000 petunia kits to mothers to promote family engagement

Lier – On Saturday, August 16, 2025, the market in Lier distributed 2,000 petunia kits to mothers, an initiative launched by Mayor Rik Verwaest (N-VA), which was positively received by visitors Marike and Greta, reports 24brussels.

The distribution took place in the morning at the market located in the province of Antwerp, Belgium, where city officials and local vendors provided the flower-growing kits containing petunia seeds and substrate for residents to grow flowers at home.

Visitors expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting the joy of planting flowers with their families. Many remarked positively on how the kits would enhance family bonding experiences outdoors.

The Purpose Behind Giving Out 2,000 Petunia Kits

Mayor Rik Verwaest (N-VA) articulated the rationale behind the initiative.

“We want to add extra value to people’s market visits,”

he stated.

“The kits make it easy for residents to grow their flowers and bring more life into their homes.”

Organisers aim to attract more families to the market, thus supporting local vendors while fostering community engagement in gardening activities.

“My husband forgot Mother’s Day, but now I’m getting a little something special,”

she shared, mentioning her intent to plant the seeds with her family immediately.

Another participant, Greta, conveyed her appreciation for the initiative.

“Mother’s Day is important. It’s nice that we received a gift here,”

she commented, noting that the kits not only serve as giveaways but also foster quality time with loved ones while enhancing the home’s greenery.

Lier’s market boasts a long-standing heritage, tracing back to the 14th century, serving as a vital gathering place for residents and vendors to purchase fresh produce, handmade crafts, and seasonal goods. In recent years, the city has sought to enhance the market experience for families.

Since 2021, several Belgian cities have adopted similar practices by distributing flower seeds, small plants, or gardening kits during special occasions such as Mother’s Day or seasonal festivals. In 2025, Lier embraced this trend by providing 2,000 petunia growing kits to attendees.
