Israeli Airstrike Targets Energy Facilities in Yemen’s Sana’a
Israeli forces confirmed on August 17, 2025, that they targeted energy infrastructure in Sana’a, Yemen, claiming the facilities were used by Houthi rebels amid escalating regional conflicts, reports 24brussels.
The Israeli military stated that the attack was a response to “ongoing assaults by the Houthi terrorist regime against the State of Israel and its citizens, including the launch of surface-to-surface missiles and drones.” Local Yemeni sources indicated that a power plant south of Sana’a was hit, resulting in a fire that disabled multiple generators.
Despite the Israeli claim, the Director of Yemen’s Electricity Corporation reported that the damage was not severe and that electricity would be restored within a few hours. It marks another episode in the ongoing exchange of strikes between Israel and Houthi forces, who are supported by Iran and frequently target Israel with missiles and drones, most of which are intercepted.
The tensions have escalated since the onset of Israel’s offensive against Hamas in Gaza, which began after the group’s attacks on October 7, 2023. This action came in the context of a recent ceasefire established between the Houthis and the United States, which came into effect in May 2025, underscoring the complexity of regional dynamics.
The retaliatory cycle between Israel and Houthi forces reflects broader regional tensions linked to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, intensifying the precarious situation in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Miftah, Vice Prime Minister of the Houthi-led Yemeni government, confirmed that repairs at the Haiz power plant have commenced and that the fire caused by the Israeli strike has been contained.
