Uganda Signs Temporary Agreement with U.S. to Host Deportees

Uganda has confirmed a temporary agreement with the United States to accept foreign nationals deported from the U.S., provided they have no criminal records and are not unaccompanied minors. The arrangement is part of Washington’s broader initiative to involve multiple countries in hosting deportees from third nations, reports 24brussels.

The agreement, announced on August 21, enables Uganda to process protection requests for foreign nationals who have been denied asylum in the United States but are unable to return to their countries of origin. “As part of bilateral cooperation between Uganda and the United States, a cooperation agreement was signed for the examination of protection requests,” stated Bagiire Vincent Waiswa, permanent secretary at Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on social media.

The deal explicitly excludes individuals with criminal records and unaccompanied minors, with Uganda expressing a preference for receiving citizens from African countries. Operational details between the two governments are still being finalized.

Recent reports have revealed that Washington is urging various nations to accept deportees from different nationalities. Honduras and Uganda have already signed similar agreements, with the U.S. also seeking participation from Spain and Ecuador.

The agreement reflects the repercussions of a July U.S. Supreme Court ruling that greenlit the resumption of deportation flights to third countries, supporting former President Trump’s stringent immigration policy. Since his reelection, Trump has expedited deportations to countries including El Salvador, South Sudan, and Eswatini, while negotiating with further governments to participate in this program.

This Uganda-U.S. agreement illustrates a pivotal strategy in the U.S. immigration enforcement approach, which relies on partner nations to temporarily host foreign nationals denied asylum or unable to return to their home countries.
