How did the 1991 referendum secure Ukraine’s independence?

This year marks the 34th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence declaration. The proclamation by the Ukrainian parliament in 1991 was a pivotal moment in Ukraine’s transition from a Soviet republic to an independent state.

The declaration was confirmed by a nationwide referendum on December 1, 1991, in which over 90% of voters expressed support for independence. In addition, in 2024, European Union leaders reaffirmed their significant political, financial, humanitarian, and military support for Ukraine in its defense against Russian invasion.

“Europe will always be at Ukraine’s side, because Ukraine is Europe.”
