Barbados Establishes Caribbean Institute for Democracy and Political Governance

Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados has announced the establishment of the Caribbean Institute for Democracy and Political Governance at the University of the West Indies (UWI). This initiative was unveiled during her speech at the CARIFESTA roundtable titled “The Great Conversation: The Idea of Caribbean Civilization,” highlights the commitment to enhance democratic values in the region, reports 24brussels.

Mottley emphasized that the new institute is pivotal for reinforcing democracy and governance across the Caribbean. “The Government of Barbados is so convinced of this that we want to collaborate with the University of the West Indies to establish here at Cave Hill the Caribbean Institute for Democracy and Political Governance,” she stated.

Addressing geopolitical tensions, Mottley expressed concerns regarding the concentration of ships in the southern Caribbean, suggesting it could indicate potential conflicts. She reiterated, “All Caribbean states are convinced of one thing: that the Caribbean must remain a zone of peace, after having been the scene of conflicts and injustices for too long.”

In her remarks, the Prime Minister highlighted the necessity of mutual respect and compassion as foundational elements for regional development. “If we do not teach each other to respect and care for one another… then dissonance will arise, leading to conflict,” she warned.

Mottley further called upon Caribbean leaders to enhance collaborative efforts to maintain peace in the region amid escalating geopolitical tensions and internal challenges. The establishment of the new institute signals a proactive approach to navigating these complexities while fostering a commitment to democratic governance in the Caribbean.
