Kapermolenpark skate park in Hasselt reopens following extensive renovation

Hasselt – The Kapermolenpark skate park in Hasselt reopened following a substantial renovation featuring new concrete surfaces and additional obstacles, lauded by local skater Gilles Lizin. The official inauguration is scheduled for the KPM Cup on September 14, 2025, reports 24brussels.

According to VRT News, the skate park in Kapermolenpark has undergone a complete transformation. The previous surface was entirely replaced with fresh concrete, and new features made of steel, granite, and natural stone were incorporated.

Officials indicated that the revamped space caters to skaters of all levels—beginners eager to learn and advanced skaters, BMX riders, and scooter enthusiasts looking to push their limits. For Gilles Lizin, a familiar participant in the KPM Skate Cup, the reopening arrives after a prolonged wait.

“We’re happy the renovation is finally finished, because we’ve been waiting a long time,”

says Lizin.

“Luckily, we can now enjoy it for another week during the summer holidays. It looks really great.”

When will Hasselt’s renovated Kapermolenpark skate park officially open?

The formal opening of the updated skate park in Kapermolenpark is planned for the KPM Cup, coinciding with Car-Free Sunday on September 14, 2025. In the meantime, Gilles Lizin has already been testing the new park since August 25, 2025.

Lizin expressed satisfaction with the improvements, noting the old park’s surface had deteriorated significantly and necessitated an upgrade. He welcomed the new equipment and remarked that the arrangement is now more dynamic, with obstacles positioned in closer proximity.

“By then, the bowl, the only remaining obstacle from the old park, will be sanded and repainted,”

explains Tine Jans (Vooruit), Alderman for Sports and Youth Culture.

“Additional greenery will also be planted in the fall to freshen up the skate park and integrate it more seamlessly into the rest of Kapermolenpark.”

The first visitors comprised not only locals but also young participants from a skate camp in Leuven. Alfons and Stan expressed their excitement about the park’s new design.

The redevelopment of Kapermolenpark is part of a broader initiative by the city, with plans for two additional skate parks currently underway.

A tender has been announced for the skate park in Sint-Lambrechts-Herk, alongside another project in Kermt, both scheduled to open later this year, further enhancing Hasselt’s urban sports landscape.

“It’s a big skate park, much bigger than the parks near us,”

they said in unison.

“There are lots of fun obstacles, and you can do street, park, and freestyle here. We’ll definitely be back.”

Twenty years ago, the park gained recognition as Europe’s first concrete skate park, solidifying Hasselt’s position on the international skateboarding map. It was closed in March 2025, and despite a minor delay due to summer heat, it reopened on August 24, 2025. The city collaborated with Nine Yards, the design firm that constructed the Olympic skate park.
