Lithuania’s Social Democrats Form New Coalition Government

Lithuania’s Social Democrats established a coalition government on Monday with the populist Dawn of Nemunas and the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union, alongside their controversial allies, thereby replacing the Democrats “For Lithuania” party, reports 24brussels.

The Farmers and Greens join the new government with the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania–Christian Families Alliance, led by Waldemar Tomaszewski, who has long criticized the government’s response to Russia’s military aggression in Ukraine and its ban on Russian television channels. Additionally, two unaffiliated MPs, Ignas Vėgėlė, known for opposing Covid vaccinations, and Rimas Jonas Jankūnas, are part of the coalition.

As per the coalition agreement, the Social Democrats, the largest party in the Seimas, will retain control of nine ministries, including finance, defense, culture, and social security, among others. The Dawn of Nemunas is set to oversee three ministries: environment, agriculture, and energy. The Farmers and Greens, along with their allies, will manage the economy and justice portfolios.
