Zemst – The municipality of Zemst is alerting drivers as 170 roe deer become active during the rutting season, which has seen three deer recently struck by vehicles. Alderman Joeri Van den Brande emphasizes the need for caution near high-risk roads, reports 24brussels.

In the province of Flemish Brabant, authorities have issued warnings as the mating season leads to increased deer movement. Recent weeks have registered three fatalities among deer due to vehicle collisions.

Officials caution that deer often cross roads unpredictably. They advise drivers to reduce speed, particularly in areas marked by wildlife crossing signs, and to remain vigilant during dusk and dawn when deer activity peaks.

What measures is Zemst taking as deer crossings rise this rutting season?

The municipality hopes that heightened awareness will prevent further incidents. Residents are encouraged to report deer sightings near roadways. Additional safety measures, including increased signage and patrols, are planned for areas with the highest deer traffic.

Authorities indicate that 170 roe deer inhabit the area, primarily active during twilight. The rutting season typically spans from mid-July to mid-August; however, this year it commenced later than usual due to seasonal variations.

“So, it’s best to adjust your driving behaviour during those times,”

says Alderman for Spatial Planning Joeri Van den Brande (Green).

“Especially in open areas and near forest edges.”

“With these signs, we want to highlight the most important hotspots,”

Van den Brande added.

“Because deer are active in specific areas, we can use the signs in a targeted manner.”

New signage will be installed along Elewitsesteenweg, Zestsesteenweg, and Grimbergsesteenweg, with hopes that they will alert drivers, minimize accidents, and safeguard both the local populace and deer.

A serious incident occurred on June 24, 2025, when a 70-year-old motorcyclist was critically injured after colliding with a deer on Mechelsebaan in Duffel. The deer unexpectedly appeared near Naalstraat, leading to the rider losing control and crashing. Emergency services rushed the man to the University Hospital Antwerp (UZA). The injured deer was later retrieved by a member of the local hunting association and was likely euthanized due to its injuries.
