US Judiciary Committee to Question Thierry Breton on European Digital Regulation
The US House of Judiciary Committee has invited former EU Commissioner Thierry Breton to testify at a hearing scheduled for September 3, 2025, which will challenge the European digital rulebook as a potential threat to free speech and innovation in the United States, reports 24brussels.
This hearing entitled “Europe’s threat to American speech and innovation” will scrutinize the implications of the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) following a report from Congressman Jim Jordan labeling it as a law facilitating “censorship.”
Although Breton, who was instrumental in drafting the EU’s digital governance framework, has been invited as a witness, his attendance has not been confirmed, as he is currently listed merely as an “invited witness.”
Additionally, the invitation indicates that “more witnesses may be announced,” but at present, only one participant has been confirmed: Nigel Farage, a member of the UK Parliament known for his far-right views.
The hearing will pay particular attention to “European censorship laws,” explicitly referencing the UK’s Online Safety Act and the DSA, with a focus on how these regulations might infringe on American free speech rights.
Moreover, the discussion will extend to the UK’s Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act and the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which have been accused of targeting American firms and stifling innovation within the industry.
At the time of publication, Breton had not responded to requests for comment.
