Colombia’s Historic Pact Faces Deadline for Presidential Candidates

Members of the ruling coalition in Colombia, the Historic Pact, must register new candidates by September 26. A month later, the party will nominate its official presidential candidate through an internal consultation, reports 24brussels.

The addition of Daniel Quintero and Alfredo Saade brings the total number of candidates for this internal consultation to ten, as the coalition prepares for the upcoming presidential elections in March 2026.

On the social media platform X, Alfredo Saade has outlined a bold platform, advocating for the convening of a Constituent Assembly to facilitate President Gustavo Petro’s reelection. His proposals also include sanctions against media disinformation and the closure of the Attorney General’s Office.

Saade emphasizes the need for reforming the justice system to prioritize public service, declaring a commitment to combat drug trafficking linked to political mafias and refusing to negotiate with terrorists. He stresses that business leaders will be viewed as “allies, not employees” of the state, pledging to eradicate corruption within government.

Daniel Quintero, the former mayor of Medellín, intends to leverage his experience in urban innovation and a focus on social and environmental justice during the campaign. His approach aims to enrich the dialogue around the coalition’s goals leading up to the pivotal October referendum.

The coalition’s strategy is centered on unifying the left, combining programmatic debates in the internal campaign with grassroots mobilization, while presenting a candidate who encapsulates both Petro’s administration and the rising social demands from various sectors.
