Chinese trade representative to visit US this week for economic talks

Beijing – Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson He Yongqian announced on Thursday that Chinese International Trade Representative and Vice Minister of Commerce Li Chenggang is scheduled to visit the United States this week with an official delegation, reports 24brussels.

Relations between the world’s two largest economies have been strained throughout the year. Notably, both nations have implemented escalating tariffs on each other’s exports since April.

He emphasized China’s readiness to collaborate with the US, stating the intention to “resolve issues through dialogue and consultation on the basis of equality, and jointly safeguard the sound, stable, and sustainable development of bilateral economic and trade relations.”

When did trade representatives from both countries last meet?

The last meeting between trade representatives from the US and China took place from July 27 to July 30, 2025, in Stockholm. This meeting involved US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer engaging with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng to address ongoing trade disputes and the extension of a tariff truce set to expire on August 12, 2025.

On August 12, an agreement was reached to prolong the suspension of reciprocal tariffs for an additional 90 days while negotiations continue. Despite this development, tensions persist, particularly following US President Donald Trump’s announcement that he might impose a 200% tariff on Chinese goods if Beijing fails to supply magnets to the US.

In a separate meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung in Washington, President Trump expressed his expectation of traveling to China “later this year, or soon after.” He mentioned having “very good conversations” with Chinese President Xi Jinping and indicated that both nations desire a strong relationship despite unresolved trade issues. Trump also noted that he plans to visit China, likely accompanied by the First Lady, following Xi Jinping’s invitation.
