WFP Executive Director Calls for Urgent Humanitarian Access in Gaza

World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director Cindy McCain visited Gaza, highlighting the dire humanitarian crisis gripping the region. Witnessing extensive destruction and dire conditions firsthand, she underscored the immediate need for safe and unrestricted access to humanitarian aid for vulnerable families, a right currently hindered by the Israeli regime, reports 24brussels.

A recent expert panel confirmed that famine is present in Gaza City, with warnings that it could escalate rapidly without a significant influx of humanitarian assistance. “This is only the fifth famine confirmed in this century,” stated the WFP.

After nearly two years of relentless conflict, many families in Gaza have been displaced multiple times and struggle to meet basic survival needs. McCain described the situation as reaching a critical breaking point, characterized by increasing desperation. She emphasized the urgent need to revive WFP’s network of over 200 food distribution points, community kitchens, and bakeries throughout the enclave.

While visiting areas such as Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis, McCain witnessed the devastating effects of prolonged warfare. At a nutrition clinic, she encountered severely malnourished children, their condition a stark contrast to their previous healthy appearances. Displaced mothers recounted harrowing tales of their day-to-day struggle to secure even minimal food resources.

With substantial experience in complex conflict zones, WFP stands prepared to swiftly scale operations to confront this urgent humanitarian crisis.
