Russia Warns of “Irreparable Consequences” Amid Renewed Sanctions on Iran

Russia issued a grave warning on Friday regarding the potential “irreparable consequences” of renewed sanctions against Iran, following Britain, France, and Germany’s decision to reinstate restrictions due to Tehran’s non-compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal, reports 24brussels.

In a statement, the Russian foreign ministry urged European nations to reconsider their “erroneous decisions” that could lead to further tragedy. This warning underscores Russia’s position as a key player in the ongoing dialogue surrounding Iran’s nuclear program.

Russia accused the E3 countries of jeopardizing diplomatic efforts aimed at securing a peaceful resolution to the ongoing standoff over Iran’s nuclear activities. Its stance reflects a broader concern about the implications of such actions on regional stability.

As a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a party to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Russia has a vested interest in the outcome of diplomatic negotiations with Iran. The JCPOA was established to provide Iran with sanctions relief in exchange for limiting its nuclear program.

The three nations formally informed the UN Security Council on Thursday, asserting that Iran is significantly failing to meet its obligations under the nuclear agreement. This notification initiated a process known as the “snapback mechanism,” which sets a 30-day timeframe for reinstating previously lifted sanctions.

In response to these developments, Iran has indicated it would “respond appropriately” to the sanctions reinstatement. This decision threatens to halt what has been the most prolonged and concerted diplomatic effort to resolve the Iranian nuclear crisis.

Over the past decade, Tehran and Moscow have strengthened their political, military, and economic ties, particularly as Russia has increasingly shifted away from the West. This partnership has solidified further since Russia’s military actions in Ukraine, signaling a deeper collaboration between the two nations.

China also weighed in on the issue, stating that the snapback mechanism invoked by European countries is “not constructive.” Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun emphasized that the Iranian nuclear issue is currently at a pivotal point and that resuming UN sanctions would undermine diplomatic resolution efforts.
