Fashion Icon Giorgio Armani Dies at 91

Renowned Italian designer Giorgio Armani has passed away at his home in Milan at the age of 91, as confirmed by his fashion house on Thursday. Despite health issues that caused him to miss Milan Men’s Fashion Week in June, Armani remained active in his company until recently, reports 24brussels.

Born in Piacenza in 1934, Armani initially studied medicine before pivoting to a career in fashion. He began as a window dresser at La Rinascente and later designed menswear for Nino Cerruti. In 1975, he co-founded Giorgio Armani with partner Sergio Galeotti.

Armani rose to global fame in the 1980s for his innovative, relaxed suit designs that redefined traditional tailoring. His contributions played a pivotal role in establishing the concept of “power dressing” for both genders. Armani’s creations frequently appeared on red carpets and were featured in iconic films and television series such as American Gigolo and Miami Vice.

Over more than five decades, he expanded his brand into haute couture, ready-to-wear fashion, accessories, fragrances, home interiors, and hotels, maintaining control over the business, which is now valued in the billions of euros.

Armani’s impact extended well into Belgian fashion circles. In July 2024, Queen Mathilde of Belgium was photographed donning a Giorgio Armani Privé outfit, reinforcing the designer’s strong association with Belgian high society.

Fashion Club 70, Armani’s distribution partner in the Benelux, has represented the brand for decades. Its owner, Luc Dheedene, began advocating for Italian brands like Armani in the 1980s, helping to solidify the designer’s presence in Belgium’s luxury market.

In an interview with GQ in 2021, Armani recognized Belgian design talent, specifically commending Antwerp designer Dries Van Noten for his elegant sensibilities.

Often referred to as Re Giorgio (King Giorgio) in Italy, Armani is credited with revolutionizing international fashion through his minimalist approach and emphasis on elegance. He held the titles of CEO and creative director of his label until his death.

His funeral will be a private affair, in accordance with his wishes, as reported by Italian news agency Ansa. To honor his legacy, he will lie in state at the Teatro Armani in Milan on Saturday and Sunday, allowing admirers to pay their respects.
