Samsung Launches Advertising on Family Hub Refrigerators

A recent software update for Samsung’s Family Hub refrigerators in the United States has introduced advertisements for the first time. This pilot program involves “promotions and curated advertisements,” contradicting previous assurances from Samsung that there were “no plans” for such a feature, reports 24brussels.

The rollout is characterized as a strategy to “strengthen the value” of owning a Samsung smart fridge, marking a notable shift in the company’s approach to integrating ads into its home appliances.

According to a statement from Samsung, Family Hub refrigerators will receive an over-the-network (OTN) software update, which includes new Terms of Service (T&Cs) and a Privacy Notice (PN). The advertisements will display on specific Family Hub refrigerator Cover Screens, particularly when these screens are idle. Importantly, users will have the option to dismiss these ads, preventing their recurrence during the campaign period.

Reactions to the introduction of ads on refrigerators have been mixed, with many expressing disbelief online, particularly on platforms like Reddit. This development aligns with Samsung’s broader “screens everywhere” initiative, which has seen the company gradually incorporating advertisements into various products. The trend began notably in 2016 when Samsung started embedding ads into its smart TVs.

This initiative reflects not just a shift in Samsung’s marketing strategy but also a broader trend within the tech industry, as companies increasingly seek new revenue streams through digital advertising. Industry experts suggest that the move could affect consumer perceptions of smart appliances, raising questions about privacy and user experience in home technology.
