Immigration ‘destroys countries from within,’ the U.S. president says.
On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump urged British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to utilize military forces to manage immigration, asserting that it “destroys countries from within,” reports 24brussels.
Trump’s comments came during a joint press conference at Chequers, the official residence of the prime minister, on the last day of his two-day state visit to the United Kingdom. When asked by a reporter from the tabloid The Sun about his advice for Starmer, Trump highlighted his own strategies to limit immigration to the United States.
“I told the Prime Minister I would stop it. And it doesn’t matter if you call out the military! It doesn’t matter what means you use. But it’s going to destroy — it destroys countries from within,” Trump stated. His remarks coincided with ongoing discussions in the U.S. regarding plans for the Pentagon to establish a buffer zone along the southern border and empower active-duty troops to temporarily detain migrants who illegally cross into the U.S.
Furthermore, Trump noted that the U.S. is actively working to deport many individuals who entered the country unlawfully. “We have to remove them. And we are removing them. We have no choice. And I feel very strongly about it,” he added, referencing the complexities involved in addressing the issue of illegal immigration, including individuals released from prisons and mental health institutions.
In response to Trump’s suggestions, Starmer reiterated that the United Kingdom has its own systematic approach to tackle irregular migration, particularly from France across the English Channel. He mentioned that a migrant had been deported earlier that day under an agreement with France.
Concluding his visit, Trump and Starmer signed a technology pact and engaged in discussions about the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, reflecting a broader context of international cooperation during the visit.
