T-Mobile Announces CEO Change as Mike Sievert Steps Down
T-Mobile is set to replace Mike Sievert as CEO, with the mobile carrier’s chief operating officer, Srini Gopalan, taking over the reins on November 1st. Sievert will transition to the role of vice chairman, marking the end of his more than five-year tenure as CEO, reports 24brussels.
Sievert succeeded the outspoken John Legere following T-Mobile’s merger with Sprint in 2020. During his leadership, Sievert oversaw several pivotal acquisitions, including the purchase of Mint Mobile, partially owned by actor Ryan Reynolds, and an agreement to acquire a significant portion of US Cellular. Earlier in 2025, T-Mobile faced controversy when it retracted its diversity, equity, and inclusivity policies to secure approval from FCC Chair Brendan Carr for its acquisition of the fiber brand Lumos.
Gopalan, appointed COO in March 2025, previously served on the board of Deutsche Telekom and held executive positions at Vodafone and Bharti Airtel. In June, Sievert refuted speculation regarding an early departure before the end of his contract in April 2028, while acknowledging that Gopalan’s hiring was part of a succession planning strategy.
In a press release, Gopalan emphasized his commitment to leading T-Mobile’s strategic initiative to transform into the most data-driven, AI-enabled, and digital-first company in the industry. He stated, “Our culture and brand have made us the most admired and customer-centric company in our industry. What lies ahead of us is even more exciting because over the last five years, we have built America’s best network together with digital and AI capabilities that are far ahead of anyone else in our industry.”
