Malware Embedded in Steam Game Targets Crypto Wallets of Streamers
Steam has removed the game BlockBlasters, which contained malware specifically engineered to drain the cryptocurrency wallets of players, affecting hundreds of victims. The game, which is a 2D platformer, reportedly siphoned more than $150,000 from unsuspecting players, including $32,000 from a streamer raising funds for cancer treatment, reports 24brussels.
According to malware tracker vx-underground, attackers executed a spearphishing campaign aimed at streamers, enticing them to promote the game in exchange for payment. “Unfortunately, the Steam game was actually a cryptodrainer masquerading as a legitimate video game,” vx-underground stated in a post on X.
The game first appeared on Steam on July 30, 2025, but a malicious update introducing the cryptodrainer was stealthily rolled out on August 30. Developed by Genesis Interactive, the game had received over 200 “very positive” reviews prior to its removal. Its harmful nature largely went unnoticed until Latvian streamer Raivo Plavnieks, known as Rastaland.TV, reported losing $32,000 after downloading BlockBlasters over the weekend.
Steam’s action comes amidst a wave of game removals due to malware issues. Other titles, such as PirateFi, Sniper: Phantom’s Resolution, and Chemia, were also taken down for infecting Windows computers. The removal of BlockBlasters occurred on September 21, 2025. Valve has been approached for comment regarding this incident but has not yet responded.
