China’s tech tyranny unveiled: WUC leaders reaffirm peaceful resistance

The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) has released its latest brief, highlighting the ongoing struggle for Uyghur rights and advocating for religious freedom and peaceful resistance, reports 24brussels. A recent report by OpenAI, published on October 7, presents troubling evidence that operatives linked to the Chinese government are allegedly attempting to misuse artificial intelligence tools for monitoring Uyghurs and other “high-risk” groups.

The report cites incidents where users sought assistance in developing systems to analyze Uyghur travel data and police records, as well as generating promotional materials for software designed to scan social media for “extremist speech.” OpenAI has confirmed the banning of both users, cautioning that authoritarian regimes are increasingly exploiting AI technologies to bolster surveillance and control.

These revelations have reignited concerns over China’s pervasive digital repression in East Turkistan (Xinjiang) and beyond. On October 8, WUC Executive Committee Chair Rushan Abbas and Centre for Uyghur Studies Executive Director Abdulhakim Idris attended a reception in Washington to honor Representative Mark Walker, nominated as the US Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom. At the event, Abbas presented Walker with her memoir, *Unbroken: One Uyghur’s Fight for Freedom*, underlining the enduring determination of Uyghurs in their quest for faith and justice amid Chinese oppression.

That same day, WUC Vice President Zumretay Arkin chaired a webinar organized by the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation (UNPO) to commemorate the International Day of Non-Violence. The event, titled “Non-Violent Struggles for Peoples’ Rights: Lessons from History and Today,” included discussions with representatives from East Turkistan, Tibet, West Papua, and Assyria. Arkin emphasized that true resistance is found not in confrontation but in maintaining humanity amidst oppression, reaffirming WUC’s commitment to peaceful advocacy, global solidarity, and the defense of universal human rights.
