Google Introduces New Chrome Feature to Manage Notifications
Google has launched a new feature for its Chrome browser that automatically disables notifications from websites that users frequently ignore. This update is aimed at reducing notification overload for both Android and desktop users, reports 24brussels.
The auto-revocation feature builds on Chrome’s existing Safety Check functionality, which already manages permissions related to camera access and location tracking. This update allows users to unsubscribe from excessive notifications from websites with minimal interaction.
Less than one percent of notifications in Chrome are actively engaged with by users, according to Google’s data. The new feature will not affect permissions for installed web apps, focusing solely on sites that send numerous notifications that go largely unread.
“We’ve already been testing this feature. Our test results show a significant reduction in notification overload with only a minimal change in total notification clicks,” Google stated in a recent announcement. “Our experiments also indicate that websites that send a lower volume of notifications are actually seeing an increase in clicks.”
Chrome users can opt out of the auto-revocation feature or individually restore notifications from specific sites by revisiting those websites or adjusting permissions via the Safety Check option. Google has yet to confirm the feature’s rollout date.
