Union Minister for Power Highlights India’s Leadership in Energy Transitions at G20

On October 11, 2025, Union Minister for Power and Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, led the Indian delegation at the G20 Energy Transitions Ministerial Meeting hosted in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, under South Africa’s G20 Presidency, reports 24brussels.

In his address, Minister Lal underscored energy security as a critical global challenge, particularly for the Global South. He urged for enhanced G20 collaboration to ensure economic stability, sustainability, and equitable access to energy. Lal emphasized India’s significant progress in meeting its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target, achieving 50% non-fossil fuel capacity five years ahead of the 2030 deadline.

The Minister outlined India’s ambitious clean energy aspirations, including its goal to become a global hub for green hydrogen production and to achieve 100 gigawatts (GW) of nuclear power capacity by 2047. He cited India’s Biofuels Programme as a notable success, highlighting the achievement of 20% ethanol blending and India’s leadership in the Global Biofuels Alliance, which currently encompasses 32 countries and 14 international organizations.

Acknowledging the disproportionate effects of climate change on developing nations, Lal advocated for climate justice and reinforced the necessity of climate finance and technology transfer commitments as outlined in the Paris Agreement. He also drew attention to the energy access gap in Africa, reiterating India’s support for Mission 300, an initiative aimed at electrifying 300 million Africans by 2030.

In conclusion, Lal encouraged all countries to collaborate in creating resilient, sustainable, and equitable energy systems. He extended an invitation for the Bharat Urja Manthan – A Global Energy Conclave, scheduled for March 2026 in New Delhi. During the meeting, Lal engaged in bilateral discussions with Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, Minister of Electricity and Energy of South Africa, and Lars Aagaard Møller, Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities from Denmark, on the sidelines of the G20 event.
