“We welcome Anthropic’s expansion and look forward to working together”: PM Modi on US AI company setting up in India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his support for the expansion of Anthropic, a US-based artificial intelligence company, in India, noting the potential for collaboration to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) for growth across key sectors, reports 24brussels.
Anthropic is establishing its first office in Bengaluru as part of its expanding presence in the Indo-Pacific region. During a recent meeting, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei discussed the company’s plans with Modi and emphasized India’s integral role in the future of AI. “Today I met with PM @narendramodi to discuss Anthropic’s expansion to India–where Claude Code use is up 5x since June. How India deploys AI across critical sectors like education, healthcare, and agriculture for over a billion people will be essential in shaping the future of AI,” Amodei noted on X.
This meeting underscores India’s ascending status as a hub for artificial intelligence development and innovation. The Bengaluru office marks Anthropic’s second in the Indo-Pacific region, following Tokyo. Karnataka’s Minister for Electronics, IT/BT, Priyank Kharge, confirmed the establishment on X, stating that the decision reflects Bengaluru’s reputation as a global technology center. “Global technology leaders continue to choose this city for its unmatched innovation environment and deep talent base,” he added.
Kharge highlighted the city’s burgeoning AI developer community, which ranks fifth globally in AI and DeepTech ecosystems and is home to over 100,000 AI professionals, constituting 50% of India’s AI talent. “Anthropic’s arrival will further expand opportunities for local talent, R&D, and AI product development,” he stated.
Established as an AI safety and research company, Anthropic focuses on building reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. One of its flagship products is Claude, a next-generation AI assistant. The opening of Anthropic’s Bengaluru office aligns with the Indian government’s emphasis on promoting AI as a critical enabler of growth across various industries.
