Renovation of Leuven’s Oude Sluismolen commenced in 2025, led by the Flemish Environment Agency (VMM) and the city, under the direction of Alderman Dirk Vansina, with a focus on structural repairs, vegetation removal, and the installation of a steel roof and canopy by June 2026, reports 24brussels.

The project, as reported by VRT News, is currently underway at Sluispark in Leuven. The initiative underscores a commitment to revitalizing this historical landmark, integrating it more closely with the surrounding landscape.

Alderman Dirk Vansina (CD&V), responsible for Monuments and Immovable Heritage in Leuven, detailed the restoration objectives, emphasizing the need to stabilize and repair the remaining sections of the mill’s structure.

Overview of the Renovation Plans for Leuven’s Oude Sluismolen

Initial efforts will involve clearing overgrown vegetation to safeguard the area and mitigate further deterioration. Crews will repair damaged brickwork, restore quay walls and bulkheads along the Dyle River, and reconstruct the collapsed stairs and platform.

The renovation is set to conclude by June 2026. An added steel-pitched roof and canopy will enhance the connection between the mill and Sluispark, providing shade and improving visitor amenities at the nearby water playground.

“The Sluismolen will soon form a beautiful link between Sluispark and the Dyle River,”

Vansina noted. The Oude Sluismolen has been an integral part of Leuven since the 12th century, historically serving as a grain mill, bridge, and lock that connected both banks of the Dyle River. Its ongoing significance is tied to local trade and daily life over the centuries.

Repeated flooding has caused substantial damage to the mill over time, leaving only the concrete lock structure by the 20th century, which itself has deteriorated further. This renovation aims to stabilize what remains and weave it into the fabric of Sluispark, ensuring the preservation of a vital piece of Leuven’s medieval heritage.
