Rivierenhof park in Deurne launches campaign to promote cyclist safety and pedestrian respect

Deurne – Rivierenhof park has launched a campaign aimed at slowing down over 5,000 daily cyclists, employing signage, ground markings, patrols, and reflective slapwraps, reports 24brussels.

Provincial Executive Mireille Colson (N-VA) initiated the campaign following numerous complaints from park visitors about cyclists speeding near playgrounds and the castle terrace adjacent to a busy avenue. The aim is to enhance safety and courtesy among all park users.

“With this campaign, we want to make it clear that pedestrians have the right of way everywhere in the park,” Colson stated.

Colson emphasized the need to foster safer behavior among cyclists.

“We also want to encourage courtesy and safer behaviour among cyclists,” she added.

How is Rivierenhof Deurne campaign slowing 5,000+ cyclists daily?

Data from the province of Antwerp highlights that Rivierenhof park often hosts heavy traffic, with more than 5,000 cyclists traversing the Sterckshof area per day—a space that sees frequent interactions between cyclists and pedestrians.

“The Rivierenhof has recently become the city’s largest pedestrian zone. Cyclists are, of course, welcome to continue using all roads, but in busy areas, we ask that you please reduce your speed,” Colson remarked.

New ground markings are installed on all access roads in Rivierenhof park, signaling that cyclists are guests. Several additional signs have been positioned throughout the park to promote reduced speeds and respect for pedestrians. Park rangers will monitor the area until the end of March 2026 to remind cyclists to adhere to safe riding practices.

As part of the initiative, cyclists who obey the speed guidelines will receive reflective slapwraps, which enhance visibility for safer travel. On the campaign’s launch day, many cyclists complied with speed advisories, although some riders on electric bikes persisted in maintaining high speeds.

Colson reiterated that the campaign is centered on awareness and safety.

“We will continue reminding cyclists about their behaviour and encourage courteous riding,” she noted.

Colson added,

“Further action will only be taken if necessary.”

Concerns have been raised regarding electric bikes and mopeds. A visiting cyclist shared their apprehension, stating,

“I think the biggest problem is with electric bikes and mopeds,”

hoping that enhanced markings would encourage slower cycling through the park.

Similar safety initiatives have been undertaken across Belgium. In 2022, Ghent launched a campaign in busy parks and squares to promote cyclist courtesy and reduced speeds, which included new signage and patrols. In 2021, Antwerp tested a pilot project in Harmoniepark, implementing reflective bands and awareness programs to enhance safety for all park users.
