Keir Starmer Advocates for Sustainable Peace at Sharm El-Sheikh Summit

At the Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit, Prime Minister Keir Starmer engaged with leaders from Qatar, Turkiye, and France, emphasizing a pivotal moment for the Middle East. He commended the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, for his leadership alongside Turkiye, Egypt, and the United States, which he credited with enabling the historic developments of the day, reports 24brussels.

Starmer described the release of hostages and the influx of humanitarian aid into Gaza as critical turning points following months of conflict. “This is what the world has been longing for,” he asserted, highlighting the necessity for lasting and sustainable peace.

The Prime Minister emphasized the UK’s commitment to support the upcoming phases of peace, confirming that the UK will participate in Gaza’s reconstruction efforts, take part in a ceasefire monitoring mission, and assist in the decommissioning of Hamas to mitigate future threats.

Starmer also expressed eagerness to collaborate with the Amir on establishing a stable and secure future for the region. He noted the importance of this moment, stating it should catalyze ongoing momentum towards implementing a comprehensive peace plan.

In separate discussions with President Erdoğan of Turkiye, Starmer thanked the President for his significant contributions to achieving the ceasefire and ending hostilities. They both acknowledged that maintaining forward momentum is essential for realizing the peace plan.

With French President Emmanuel Macron, Starmer welcomed the recent humanitarian developments, including aid distribution and the reunion of hostages with their families. Both leaders expressed gratitude for the efforts of President Trump and mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey in initiating this initial phase of peace.

Starmer reiterated the UK’s readiness to lead in the decommissioning of Hamas and in supporting the reconstruction of Gaza, emphasizing the importance of transforming recent achievements into durable peace.
