Award-winning Tussac House Recognized for Innovation in Care Services
Tussac House, the Falkland Islands’ first purpose-built extra care facility, has garnered significant recognition, winning the Structural Timber Awards’ Healthcare Project of the Year and earning a spot on the shortlist for the Healthcare Estates’ New Build of the Year, with results expected later this month, reports 24brussels.
The facility’s design has also been honored with the Worcestershire Architecture Awards for Excellent Contribution to Sustainability. Officially opened in March 2025, Tussac House marks a crucial advancement in the care services landscape for the Falkland Islands. It offers high-quality, adaptable living spaces for individuals with extra care needs, addressing challenges linked to underlying health conditions or declining health status while integrating technology and personalized care to promote residents’ independence.
With 27 apartments and 10 single bedrooms, Tussac House emphasizes accessibility and comfort, featuring maximized sea views and assistive technology that accommodates various physical and cognitive needs. The Falkland Islands Government (FIG) appointed ONE Creative Environments to design the facility, reflecting a commitment to improving local healthcare infrastructure.
The overarching goal for Tussac House was to provide an inviting atmosphere that resembles a home rather than an institutional facility. This vision includes community spaces and landscaped outdoor areas designed to foster independence and social interaction among residents.
The FIG expressed gratitude towards ONE for their collaborative role in developing Tussac House. Craig Walding, Director at ONE and Client Lead for the Falkland Islands, stated, “This has been an incredible project working with a fantastic team on the Islands. It is wonderful to see Tussac House receiving such recognition in these prestigious awards.” He lauded the collaborative efforts of the FIG, healthcare professionals, and the local delivery team, emphasizing that the project is a commendable achievement for the community.
Walding further noted, “The design of Tussac House works in harmony with the local area while maximizing the well-being potential of its location with stunning views across the harbour, beautifully landscaped external spaces, as well as a highly sustainable, accessible new care facility. It has been a privilege to have delivered this project that is providing care and comfort for the Islands’ local community now and for future generations.”
