OpenAI to Introduce ‘Erotica’ Feature for ChatGPT Users Pending Age Verification

OpenAI announced plans to introduce ‘erotica’ for ChatGPT users upon implementing age verification in December. This development signals an expansion of conversational capabilities for adult users, reports 24brussels.

In a post on X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that the company aims to support mature conversations as part of its initiative to “treat adult users like adults.” He affirmed that the age-gating process would facilitate even broader content, such as ‘erotica,’ for verified users. Earlier this month, OpenAI hinted at allowing developers to create “mature” ChatGPT applications, contingent on the establishment of appropriate age verification and controls.

OpenAI is not the only tech company venturing into adult-themed AI interactions. xAI, founded by Elon Musk, previously launched flirty AI companions that are represented as 3D anime models within its Grok application. This trend reflects a growing interest in integrating more adult content into consumer technology.

In addition to the ‘erotica’ feature, OpenAI plans to unveil a refreshed version of ChatGPT, intended to align closely with user preferences reminiscent of the GPT-4o model. Following the transition to GPT-5 as the default model, OpenAI reinstated GPT-4o after user feedback indicated that the newer version lacked the desired level of engagement.

Altman commented on the restrictions previously placed on ChatGPT, explaining that these were implemented to prioritize user mental health. He acknowledged that this approach rendered the chatbot less enjoyable for many users without mental health concerns. OpenAI has since developed tools to better identify users experiencing mental distress.

Furthermore, OpenAI has established a council focused on “well-being and AI,” comprising specialists who will be tasked with navigating complex scenarios related to mental health and technology. However, the council has faced criticism for not including suicide prevention experts, who have previously urged OpenAI to enhance its protective measures for users at risk of suicidal thoughts.

Altman concluded by expressing confidence in OpenAI’s capacity to safely relax content restrictions, indicating that the company believes new tools will help mitigate serious mental health issues among users.
