Antwerp will commence repairs on the two parallel Mexico bridges in Eilandje from October 20 to October 31, 2025, following their closure since summer. The 420-ton structures are vital for road traffic, Tram 24, shipping, and commuter access during the 12-day repair period, reports 24brussels.

According to VRT News, the Mexico bridges connect the city center to significant locations such as the Port House and feature dedicated lanes for cars, trucks, and trams. The bridges had been closed due to slight shifts caused by frequent openings and closings over time, which increased the risk of structural damage with each movement.

In preparation for this repair work, both road traffic and trams have been barred from using the bridges since the summer. The city aims to ensure the bridges are safely repaired to mitigate any potential risks in the future.

When will Antwerp complete repairs on the Mexico bridges in Eilandje?

The repairs will be completed over 12 days, starting on October 20, 2025, the day after the Antwerp Marathon, during which one bridge section will open temporarily for runners. Traffic diversions currently in place will remain throughout the repair period, with Tram line 24 terminating at the MAS museum.

Furthermore, shipping traffic will be suspended, preventing vessels from passing beneath the bridges on October 20 and 21, 2025. The city anticipates that disruptions will conclude by the evening of October 31, 2025, when the bridges are set to reopen.

Antwerp has previously engaged in similar bridge repairs. In 2019, the Kattendijk Bridge was closed for renovations that addressed misalignment issues and reinforced the structure. During that project, road traffic had to be diverted, tram services ceased temporarily, and shipping was halted.
