Kortrijk – Babbe Vanneste from Rollegem is conducting a comprehensive study on accessibility for students with disabilities in Kortrijk, collaborating with Back Forward and Vives University of Applied Sciences. Her report, expected in April 2026, aims to inform urban improvements and inclusive policies, reports 24brussels.

As VRT News highlighted, Vanneste is focused on evaluating the accessibility challenges faced by students with physical disabilities in Kortrijk. This year, she initiated a program at Vives University of Applied Sciences with the goal of fully participating in student life.

In partnership with Back Forward, an organization dedicated to enhancing access and mobility for individuals with disabilities, Vanneste embarked on her investigation with practical experiences. Recently, she undertook her first bus trip to Kortrijk to assess public transport’s suitability for wheelchair users, followed by visits to local cafes and restaurants to test the accessibility of these venues.

Assessing Accessibility for Students with Disabilities

Vanneste is expanding her research to evaluate various other aspects of the city’s accessibility. She aims to ascertain whether there are sufficient parking spaces equipped with loading ramps for vans designated for individuals with disabilities, as well as the feasibility of shopping and enjoying cultural activities, such as cinema visits at Budascoop.

Her ultimate ambition is for her findings to lead to significant advancements in Kortrijk’s accessibility for students with physical disabilities. Vanneste is proactive in engaging local officials and has met with several aldermen to share her insights and propose potential solutions to the challenges identified.

The final report will detail all her observations, particularly outlining the areas that require improvement versus those that are functioning effectively. This information will be accessible to city officials, university personnel, and the wider public.

“My dream is for everyone to be able to come to Kortrijk without a care in the world, because I know it can be a struggle to get around here. That’s what I want to fight for, and I hope it’s taken into account so other people can enjoy it,”

Vanneste stated.

Over the past ten years, Kortrijk has prioritized enhancing accessibility for individuals with disabilities. In 2015, the city initiated a plan to improve bus stops and sidewalks to meet accessibility standards.

Since 2018, local organizations like Back Forward have provided funding for research and initiatives aimed at creating more inclusive environments. Vives University of Applied Sciences also emphasizes the importance of inclusive education, motivating students to explore accessibility issues within the urban context.
